Frequently Asked Questions
How much do the signs cost?
Prices are based primarily on the size of the board,
and range from $10 for a 3″ x 12″ board (e.g. for a child’s
room door), up to $70 for an 8″ x 24″ (a typical outdoor
house sign, and on up to $175 for a 12″ x 24″ farm, ranch
or acreage sign.
Price includes the carving and a clear coat of urethane for
protection.
What about shipping costs?
We generally ship via Canada Post and pass on our Small
Business Discount to the customer. We charge only what
Canada Post charges us. We do not charge for wrapping
and packaging, we do not charge GST on the signs themselves.
How do I order?
You may use our Online Order Form to send us your sign details and upload any file graphics or a rough sketch of what you have in mind.
Alternatively you can print off our Downloadable Order Form, fill in your contact information, and include layout sketch. Simply scan the completed print form and email it back to us at: woodpeckersigns@shaw.ca.
We will reply to you with a quote. At that time we will request that you call us (for your protection) to verify the details, discuss any
issues, and obtain payment information.
How do I pay?
We accept VISA, MasterCard, and E-transfers. You will not be
charged until the sign has been shipped. We will then know the exact
amount of the shipping cost which will be added to the sign cost.
Unfortunately, we cannot use PayPal, and do not have a secure
website payment server.
How do You Make the Sign?
Well, as we may have mentioned previously, we are Old School – sort of. Carving wood by hand can take a long time. We like to reduce this time (and your cost) by power carving freehand with a router. However, hand routers are bulky and it can be very easy to make a mistake which ruins the wood surface. This usually forces a complete start over. Fortunately, so many years of experience have given our woodpeckers masterful control.
Another important reason we choose to freehand instead using a CNC machine is soul. You can tell a hand carved sign by a skilled carver like you can tell a great painting by a skilled painter. Signs by CNC are clean and smooth. They are fine in their own way, but there is little soul to them. We want you to always remember that a human being made your sign with love.
What kind of things can be put on a sign?
Our starting point would be the wording. Then graphics are
added, as desired. The pricing generally includes one scene
or graphic, with perhaps a complementary smaller one on the
other side of the board. We are happy to consult with the
customer as to “how much”, and “where”.
Most of our graphics are done freehand (with a router). We
are open to customer-supplied graphics and/or logos. However,
we must consider the complexity and “do-ability” of such
artwork. There may be a small additional charge for complex
designs.
We suggest choosing from certain themes… Nature, Animals,
Sports, the Arts, etc. and are open to suggestions.
How large can you go?
We have made signs up to 3 foot (91cm) high, and some as long as 10 foot (304cm).
Oversize signs may present challenges in delivery & transportation.
due to shape, weight, etc.
How long does it take?
After completion of ordering, the sign can usually be completed
within a couple of days, and the mail shortly after. A week’s
turnaround is usual estimate.
What Kind of Wood do you use?
We use top quality Western Red Cedar. There are many
variations in color, tightness of grain, etc. with this wood, so
no two signs will look alike. We can offer a choice of “lighter”
or “darker” hue, but cannot guarantee a specific shade.
An option for color might be for the customer to stain the
finished sign (after market) if it is to match something else.
We recommend the customer do some “after-care” for the
sign… adding additional sealer urethane coats on an annual
basis, e.g. We include a “Care & Feeding” guide with each
sign.
